Lateral Compartment Disease: Varus Osteotomy

- See: Distal Femoral Osteotomy

- Discussion:
     - usually involves a medial closing wedge osteotomy of the distal femur (supracondylar region) fixed with a blade plate;
     - femoral osteotomy is sometimes reserved for valgus deformities of  > 12 deg and > 10 deviation of the knee joint from horizontal;
     - preoperative ROM of at least 90 deg, and < 15 deg flexion contracture, and no associated instability are required;
     - medial displacement of distal fragment will help maintain mechanical axis of limb in center of knee joint by restoring axis of femoral
            shaft to its preoperative position;
     - plate fixation of the distal femur is usually indicated
