    - may cause often fatal bacteremia common due to localized infections following surgery or burns;
    - may cause post burn sepsis, bacteremia, septicemia, otitis media, meningitis, pneumonia, and other infections;
    - is the predominant infecting organism in deep puncture wounds of the foot (see foot infections);
    - it is the only gram negative bacillus which produces a glycocalyx;
    - source: widely distributed in nature; hospital environment;
    - may be normal flora in 5% of the population;
    - microscopy reveals gm neg rods in singles;
