- Discussion:
- is a potassium removing resin, for hyperkalemia;
- works as cation exchange resin, Na for K;
- because of its delayed action, a cation exchange resin such as sodium sulfonate should be used only in mild cases of hyperkalemia or in catabolic patients with continuous release of intracellular potassium;
- Precautions:
- caution w/ CHF, marked edema, or severe HTN, due to high Na load;
- must monitor K, Mg, and Ca; (hypomagnesemia & hypocalcemia)
- concomitant administration of MgOH, non-absorbable cation donating antacids, and laxatives should be avoided; (See SORBITOL)
- Dosage:
- dose of 15 to 20 gm tid to qid may be taken orally or by retention enema;
- adult: 15gm-60gm PO suspension (3-4ml/gm) q6hr prn;
- 70% sorbitol solution is given concurrently to prevent fecal impaction
