Type III Collagen

- See: Collagen Discussion:

- Discussion:
- in Dupuytren's, there is an increase in type III collagen (which is similar to scar tissue);
- normal fascia is mostly of type I collagen;
- Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome:
- see collagen disorders;
- at least 9 types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome have been defined;
- mutations in Type III collagen may result in a of lethal form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome;
- most severe form is known as Type IV and is characterized by sudden rupture of large arteries or intestines;
- since the strength of large arteries depends largely on fibrils of type III collagen, it is possible that some forms of type IV Ehlers-
Danlos syndrome result from mutations in the type III collagen gene
