Carbamazepine / Tegertol



- for siezure disorders, 2nd line treatment for temporal lobe, grand mal, but not for petit mal siezures;
- Adult: 200 mg bid, initially; Increase by 200 mg/day, then usually 800-1200 mg/day;
- Note Hematological side effects; Must check CBC,
- Serum levels:8-12; > 15 is toxic;
- Peds: < 6yrs: Initial: 10 mg/kg/day divided bid; increase by up to 20 mg/kg/day; Ped: 6-12 yrs: Initial: 10mg/kg/day PO divided bid or 100 mg PO bid; increase by 100 mg/day;
- Maintenance: 20-30 mg/kg/day divided tid/qid (max 1000 mg/24hr);
- Supplied: Tabs: 200 mg; chewable tablets 100 mg; suspension 100 mg/5ml
