- congenital myopathies are a group of different conditions, w/ variable genetic patterns of inheritance, that lead to muscle weakness in infancy
and early childhood;
- include central core disease, nemaline myopathy, myotubular myopathy, congenital fiber type disproportion, and centronuclear myopathy;
- children w/ congenital myopathies present as "floppy" babies in whom weakness leads to failure to achieve normal motor milestones;
- generally they improve with age, but children are never athletically adept, and they may deteriorate and die of respiratory failure
