Promethazine/Phenergan


- for N/V/motion sickness, potentiates narcotics;
- adult: 12.5-25mg PO,PR,IM,IV bid/qid; (reduce dose w/ IV and slowly)
- drowsiness common; compatable with morphine and meperidine;
- motion sickness: 0.5 mg/kg/dose q12hr PO prn;
- N/V: 0.25-0.5 mg/kg/dose q4-6hr IM or PR prn;
- is a phenothiazine derivative that possesses antihistaminic, sedative, anti-motion sickness, antiemetic and anticholinergic effects;
- duration of action is 4 to 6 hrs;
- the major side effect of this drug is sedation;
- has an antihistamine action:
           - hence may be used to ameliorate allergic conditions to blood or plasma
           - in anaphylaxis as an adjunct to epinephrine;
           - active treatment of motion sickness;
           - preoperative sedation;
- prevention of nausea and vomiting following surgery;
- has an adjunctive effective with analgesics for the control of post operative pain;
- caution w/ administration to children:
- Note: Extrapyramidal symptoms can occur;
- Peds: Antihistamine: 0.1-0.5 mg/kg PO q4-6 hr during the day and 0.5mg/kg qhs PO prn;
- supplied: syrup 6.25 mg/5 ml, 25 mg/5 ml;
           tab 12.5 mg, 25 mg;
           suppos 12.5, 25, 50 mg
