Dual Photon Absorptiometry

- Discussion:
    - this technology allows subtraction of soft tissue density from bone density of bone mass of the hip, pelvis, and spine;
    - dual-photon absorptiometry uses transmission scanning w/ isotope source that emits two photoelectric peaks;
          - it allows(bone density to be measured independently of soft-tissue thickness and composition;
    - has good reproducibility (2-3 %) & accuracy (4 percent);
    - has low radiation exposure (less than 10 mrem);
    - dual-photon absorptiometry (DPA) measurements of spine have equivalent to appendicular SPA measurements in predicting both spinal and appendicular fractures and have become favored in clinical practice
