- Discussion:
for anxiety, muscle spasm, status epilepticus, sedation preop;
Adult: Stat elepticus: 0.2-.5mg/kg/dose IV q15-30 min.
w/ maximum dose of 30mg;
0.2-0.5 mg/kg/dose PO / 0.05-0.2 mg/kg/dose IV;
Peds: status epilepticus: < 5yrs: 0.2-0.5 mg/kg/dose IV q15-30 min upto max
of 5 mg; >5 yrs may administer to max of 10 mg;
sedation: 0.04-0.2 mg/kg/dose q2-4hr IM/IV to max of 0.6 mg/kg in 8hrs;
Will usually achieve peak level 1hr after dosing w/ t/2 of 20-50 hr;
w/ a duration of up to 12 hrs.
If necessary may repeat in 1hr, otherwise repeat in 3-4hr;;
Alternative for seizure: Valium at a rate of 2 mg/min IV,
until the seizure stops or to max dose of 20mg (10 min);
Anxiety, Muscle Spasm: 2-10mg PO/IM q3-4hr prn;
Preop 5-10mg PO/IM 20-30 min before the procedure;
Can be given IV just prior to the procedure;
Dont exceed >5mg/min IV-may getRespiratory arrest; Have Ambu bag
at bedside; Absorption of IM dose can be erratic;
Contraindicated with acute narrow angle glaucoma,alcohol, CNS depressants;
Note has one active metabolite;
Note not compatable w/
Phenytoin in same IV site;
