Year Book: Repair of the Triangular Ligament in Colles' Fracture: No

Effect in a Prospective Randomized Study. af-Ekenstam-F. Jakobsson-OP. Wadin-K. 1990 Year Book of Orthopedics. Article 5-11. Acta Orthop Scand. 1989 Aug. 60. pp 393-396. This prospective randomized study evaluates the effect of repair of the triangular fibrocartilage in patients with Colles' fracture and associated ulnar styloid avulsions. Surgical repair did not improve the results obtained with respect to range of motion of the wrist and forearm, in addition to grip strength. Somewhat puzzling is the finding that on follow-up wrist arthrography, contrast material leaked into the distal radioulnar joint from the radiocarpal joint with equal frequency in the treated patients and controls. Perhaps the repair performed was not effective in maintaining the integrity of the triangular fibrocartilage.--A.J. Weiland, M.D.
