Year Book: Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of Radial Head Fractures

King, GJW. Evans, DC. Kellam, JF. Abstract/Commentary:|1992 Year Book of Orthopedics. Article 2-11.|Original Article:|J Orthop Trauma. 1991. 5. pp 21-28.. Background.--There is controversy regarding the treatment of radial head fractures. There have been relatively few reports of the results of internal fixation, and most have included only short-term follow-up. Method.--Thirteen patients who had undergone open reduction and internal fixation for 14 radial head fractures were available for review at least 1 year after injury. Pain, motion, strength, stability, and function were assessed by the Elbow Evaluation Score. Grip strength was assessed and follow-up radiographs were taken. Average follow-up was 32 months, and mean patient age was 38 years. The usual mechanism of injury was a fall on an outstretched hand.
