Introduction.--The proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint is 1 of the smallest and most vulnerable joints of the hand. Injuries involving the PIP joint are not always immediately recognized and often are not initially treated. Attempts at delayed treatment are usually not successful. The authors describe the anatomy of the PIP joint and propose a classification of the different types of PIP joint injuries that may occur. The classification can be used as a guide for selecting the appropriate treatment.
