Phenobarbital
- for seizuredisorders, insomnia, anxiety;
- Adult:sedative- hypnotic:30-120mg PO or IM qd prn;
- Anticonvulsant:loading dose:10-12 mg/kg in 3 divided doses, then
1-3 mg/kg/24 hr;
- Note tolerance will develop to sedation;
- paradoxical hyperactivity seen in pediatric patients; long half life
allows single daily dose; therapeutic dose: 15-40; >45=toxic;
Contraindications: Respiratory disease with the presence of dyspnea or
obstruction; Use with caution in patients cardiovascular, pulmonary, hepatic,
or renal disease; Must reduce dose w/ liver impairment;
- Peds: Sedative: 1-2 mg/kg/24hr PO or PR in 3 DD; Hypnotic: 2-4 mg/kg/24hr
PO or PR qhs prn;
Anticonvulsant: 3-5 mg/kg/24hr PO divided into 2-3 doses following a
loading dose o 15-20 mg/kg divided into 2 equal doses 4 hours apart;
- Tab: 15, 30, 60 mg;
