Although union always occurs, shortening and angulation can result from closed treatment using traction and cast bracing. Operative intervention using locked intramedullary nails can lead to a consistently excellent outcome when the performance of the procedure is technically correct. The surgical procedure can eliminate a difficult management problem in multiply-injured patients.
