A practical approach to compartmental syndromes. Part II. Diagnosis

Mubarak SJ. Instructional Course Lectures. [JC:ifc] 32:92-102, 1983. The earliest manifestation of a compartment syndrome is elevated intracompartmental pressure. Over a relatively short period of time this increased pressure and ischemia can cause permanent injury to the contents of the compartment if left untreated. To achieve early diagnosis and treatment of a compartment syndrome, recognition of the clinical findings and measurement of intracompartmental pressure must be expeditious.
